Thomas Wesley Rymer, age 74, beloved partner, son, brother, and friend, passed away on March 24, 2022, from complications of Alzheimer's Disease. Born in Ellijay, Georgia, on August 25, 1947, Tom spent his formative childhood years in Gainesville. Attending Gainesville College and University of Georgia allowed him to establish deep roots in Georgia, ultimately spending 29 years living in Atlanta with his partner E. Dale Trice. Tom’s professional success, first in the automobile industry and later in real estate, was a testament to his endearing personality, his ability to cultivate enduring friendships, and his integrity. In Atlanta, Tom’s commitment as a member of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church was evident through his humble service as an usher as well as his generosity with PRUMC’s new Sanctuary.
In 2003, Tom’s move to Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, provided the opportunity to establish new roots in a new community, with his membership at Pt. Washington United Methodist Church. Tom’s real estate career ended early due to the progression of Alzheimer's, yet his impact was vast. Tom was someone with a generous heart, a mischievous spirit, and a beautiful sense of humor that drew others to him – whether he was walking one of his beloved dog’s Zelda, Gracie, or Daisy around the block or hosting friends at one of his favorite beach restaurants. His philanthropic commitment, from Atlanta to Santa Rosa Beach, was transformational to many. One such example is that he was a founding Board Member of the Children’s Volunteer Health Network. In addition to his career and community service, Tom’s passion for adventure fueled his love of travel. His 43 trips to Ireland brought joy and many lifelong friendships just as his 36 Christmases in Europe created lasting memories. In addition to being quite the adventurer, Tom was incredibly kind, keenly thoughtful and devoted. His deep faith in God and his love of people, from all walks of life, made Tom’s impact far-reaching and unique.
Tom is survived by his partner of 46 years E. Dale Trice of Santa Rosa Beach; his loyal friend and caregiver of four years Nicholas Calla; his siblings John Rymer Jr (Diane) and Mrs. John Gussio (John); his nephews whom he adored John Rymer III (Melissa), Kirk Rymer, David Gussio (Marcie) as well as his grandnephew Graham Gussio. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, May 1, 2022, at 4 pm in Seaside, Florida. In the early fall, a Going Forth ceremony will take place, both in Gainesville and in Ireland, in honor of Tom. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Children's Volunteer Health Network, the Pt Washington United Methodist Music Program, and The Chapel at Crosspoint Outreach.
