“Just for Grins” Mobile Dental Clinic (MDC) is a 34-foot RV that has been transformed into a 2 operatory mobile dental clinic providing free preventive dental care for children who are in need and cannot afford treatment elsewhere. It is managed and staffed by 2 Registered Dental Hygienists. The MDC began visiting the Walton County Elementary schools in August 2008.

The schools that are currently being visited by the MDC program in Walton County are Paxton School, Mossy Head School, Freeport Elementary, Van R. Butler Elementary and Bay Elementary. In August 2015, the program expanded services into North Okaloosa County elementary schools. The schools visited by the MDC program in Okaloosa County are Laurel Hill School, Baker School, Walker Elementary and Riverside Elementary. The program provides free preventive dental care to elementary students that are uninsured and underinsured. All children in grades K-5th have the opportunity to participate in the MDC program. Dental assessments, fluoride varnish treatments and oral health education are provided for Kindergarten and 1st grade students. Students in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades receive the following free preventive services: bite wing x-rays, exams by a licensed dentist, individual oral hygiene instruction, nutritional counseling, cleanings, varnish fluoride treatments and sealants.   In addition to the local schools, the MDC also partners with other local non-profits. Some of these include Boys and Girls Club of the Emerald Coast, Children in Crisis and Nellie’s Youth Village.

The visits on the MDC are fun filled. There are stuffed animals with teeth to be brushed, numerous fun dental related books to read and an educational video is always playing on the tv. The children feel very comfortable and at home on the MDC. They love the stickers, pencils and toothbrush kits that they receive. The children are very appreciative and can’t wait until their next visit on the MDC! 7,422 kids helped,11,444 teeth sealed and $2,264,261 free services provided.
